Roses
Roses are the most widely cultivated plants in gardens and parks,
and the plants with the longest horticultural history, since they've
been grown in every part of the world for centuries. It is the
national plant of the USA and of England. What's more, they are the
universal symbol of love and beauty. When you offer a rose, bear in
mind that certain rose colors carry specific symbolic meanings:
Red: love
Pink: gentle feelings of love and friendship
Dark Pink: Gratefulness and appreciation
Light Pink: Admiration, sympathy
White: Innocence, friendship, respect
Yellow: Jealousy and infidelity
Orange: Passion
Blue: Mystery
Black: Devotion, adoration
Purple: Protection
The genus contains more than 100 species, all native to the Northern
hemisphere. They are deciduous shrubs and climbing plants with
compound, often spiny green leaves, with spiny stems. Typical
species usually bear pink or white flowers with 5 lobed petals and 5
sepals. The developed cultivars feature colored, often fragrant
flowers from may to November.
Roses are divided according to the bloom form and the flower shape
in the following divisions:
Large-flowered bush (Hybrid Tea), Cluster-flowered bush
(Floribunda), Grandiflora, Climber, Miniature,
Ground-cover, Arboraceous (tree form) and Pendulous-branched
(weeping).
Our
new stock of roses arrives the first of February and as always is available
for your early season planting convenience at reduced prices while they are
in their bare root form. At this time they sell for 30% off the
regular spring and summer price. This is the best time to buy
and the best time to plant roses in the Seattle area. Since the roses
will still be without soil you will have a chance to see the root structure
to pick out the most vigorous plant. Further, when you plant roses in
the garden at this time of year, the roots have time to get well established
before the blooming season gets here.
If
you have never planted bare root plants we are happy to show you how it's
done and what all you will need to get a great planting started.
You will be enjoying wonderful roses from your garden in just a few months.
It never ceases to amaze how this little branched "stick" will be producing
beautiful roses by the end of May! With today's modern disease
resistant varieties, it takes so little effort to grow bouquets of wonderful
flowers all summer long. Get yours today!
